- 1838: Queen Victoria's coronation took place in Westminster Abbey, a year after she ascended the throne.
- 1859: The first dog show was held in Newcastle, England.
- 1894: Labor Day became a holiday for federal employees.
- 1902: The U.S. bought the concession to build a Panama canal from a French company for $40 million.
- 1914: A Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife in Sarajevo; the incident is widely held to have sparked World War I.
- 1917: The Raggedy Ann doll was invented.
- 1919: The end of World War I was marked by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles between Germany and the allies.
- 1935: President Roosevelt ordered a federal gold vault to be built at Fort Knox, Ky.
- 1939: Pan American Airways began transatlantic air service.

- 1976: The first woman was admitted to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

- 1992: The Constitution of Estonia is signed into law.
- 1994: Members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult release sarin gas attack at Matsumoto, Japan, 7 persons killed, 660 injured.
- 1996: The Constitution of Ukraine is signed into law.
- 1997: Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield II – Tyson is disqualified in the 3rd round for biting a piece from Holyfield's ear.
- 2004: The 17th NATO Summit starts in Istanbul.
- 2004: Sovereign power is handed to the interim government of Iraq by the Coalition Provisional Authority, ending the U.S.-led rule of that nation.
- 2004: Estonia, Lithuania and Slovenia join the European Exchange Rate Mechanism.
- 2006: The Republic of Montenegro is admitted as the 192nd Member of the United Nations by General Assembly resolution 60/264.
